Sixht European Hemiptera Congress25-29 June 2012
Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria
Dear Fellow Hemipterologists,
It was with great excitement that I accepted the decision to
host our Congress in Bulgaria. It also came as recognition for
the school of Professor Michail Josifov, renowned taxonomist of
Palaearctic Heteroptera and is a tribute to his memory. The geography of
the European sessions on Hemiptera shows an interesting trend:
most have been held in Southeastern Europe. Perhaps, the reason is the
rich fauna of this region, very suitable for post-congress trips, more
than in many other countries. Perhaps all this is a coincidence, but I
am glad that the Sixth Congress will be held near the cradle of these
congresses – Greece.
The venue of the Congress, Blagoevgrad, is not known as a center of
hemipterology but has a remarkable location. It is situated at the foot
of Rila Mountain, the highest mountain on the Balkan Peninsula, and is
only 30 km from Kresna Gorge in Struma Valley. These are areas with most
cold-resistant and most thermophilic fauna in Bulgaria, where many new
species of Hemiptera wereidentified and described.
We approached the organization of the next European meeting of the
hemipterologists with a hope to create better conditions for useful
discussions and presentation of your results, achievements and future
plans.
With a wish for a very successful preparation and with a hope to see you in June 2012 in Bulgaria,
Alexi Popov
Chairman
Organizing Committee of the EHC 6
